Vaccine-Induced “Herd Immunity” is a Dying Myth

In response to David Wenner’s article “Vaccination rates lag behind goal of ‘herd immunity’”  (Sunday Patriot-News, August 30, 2015), there needs to be clarification on the term herd immunity.  The theory of herd immunity was a term applied to the general immunity to a pathogen in a population based on the acquired immunity to it by a high proportion of members over time.  It was never intended to describe potential group immunity gained from vaccination.  This distinction is important.   Vaccination is not synonymous with immunization, although the terms are used interchangeably.  Natural immunization from disease is a complex interactive process involving many bodily organs and systems; it cannot be replicated by the artificial stimulation of antibodies.  There is scant evidence to suggest that herd immunity can be applied to vaccines the way the term was meant to be used for contracting a disease.  Why? Because in addition to affecting our immune system in separate pathways, contracting a disease gives permanent lifelong immunity, vaccines do not, hence the booster shot in various vaccines. Research continues to indicate that vaccine acquired herd immunity is a dying myth because many vaccines including measles and pertussis have become ineffective.¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶  To further muddy the waters, a recent lawsuit⁷  (United States v. Merck and Co.) claims that the drug company Merck “fraudulently misled the government and omitted, concealed, and adulterated material information regarding the efficacy of its mumps vaccine in violation of the FCA [False Claims Act].  Almost right on queue, a well reported mumps outbreak⁸  in the National Hockey League occurred even though all the players involved were vaccinated against the mumps, and some even were vaccinated twice.   Fully vaccinated populations still experience epidemics.  It is also not very scientific to blame measles or pertussis outbreaks on unvaccinated individuals, although it is currently very popular to do so.  Herd immunity is a term that should belong to its original intent of disease contraction and stay out of the vaccination lingo.   It just does not fit.

Neck Pain – Can Chiropractic Really Help?

Synchrony ChiroCare Neck Pain 250pxNeck pain is a very common problem affecting up to 70% of the adult population at some point in life. Though there are specific causes of neck pain such as arising from a sports injury, a car accident or “sleeping crooked,” the vast majority of the time, no direct cause can be identified and thus the term nonspecific is applied. There are many symptoms associated with patients complaining of neck pain and many of these symptoms can be confused with other conditions. Wouldn’t it be nice to know what neck related symptoms are most likely to respond to chiropractic care before the treatment has started? This issue has been investigated with very favorable results!

The ability to predict a favorable response to treatment has been termed, “clinical prediction rules” which in general, are usually made up of combinations of things the patient says and findings from exams. In a large study, data from about 20,000 patients receiving about 29,000 treatments, was collected and analyzed to find out what complaints responded well to chiropractic treatment. The results showed that the presence of any 4 of these 7 presenting complaints predicted an immediate improvement in 70-95% of the patients: 1. Neck pain; 2. Shoulder, arm pain; 3. Reduced neck, shoulder, arm movement; 4. Stiffness; 5. Headache; 6. Upper, mid back pain, and 7. None or one presenting symptom. Items not associated with a favorable immediate response included “numbness, tingling upper limbs,” and “fainting, dizziness and light-headedness in 4-12% of the patients. The “take-home” message here is that it was far more common to see a favorable response (70-95%) of the patients compared to an unfavorable response (4-12%), supporting the observation that most patients with neck complaints will respond favorably to chiropractic treatment.

So, what do we do as chiropractors when a patient presents with neck pain? First, after gathering preliminary information such as name, address and insurance information, a history of the presenting complaint is taken. This consists of information including what started the neck complaint (if you know), when it started, what makes it worse, what makes it better, the quality of pain (aches, stiff, numb, etc.), the location and if there is radiating complaints, the severity (0-10 pain scale), timing (such as worse in the morning, evening, etc.), and if there have been prior episodes. Various questionnaires are included that are scored so improvement down the road can be tracked and a past history that includes a medication list, past injuries or illnesses, family history and a systems review are standard. The exam includes vital signs (BP, pulse, height, weight, temperature and respiration), palpation, range of motion, orthopedic and neurological examination. X-ray and/or other “special tests” may also be included, when needed. A review of all the findings are discussed and after permission to treat is granted, a chiropractic treatment may then be rendered. A list treatment options may include:

  1. Adjustments;
  2. Soft tissue therapy (trigger point stimulation, myofascial release);
  3. Physical medicine modalities;
  4. Posture correction exercises and other exercises/home self-administered therapies;
  5. Education about job modifications;
  6. Co-management with other health care providers if/when needed.

Dr. Bennese's Back to School Backpack Tips

September is here. It is that time of year again.....for me to unfortunately see A LOT of local kids incorrectly wearing their backpacks to school.

Follow my simple tips to help your child to grow properly without creating misalignment and faulty muscle patterns.

Synchrony Chirocare Back to School Backpack TipsCarrying a backpack on one shoulder is a recipe for creating abnormal muscle patterns. Use wide padded straps on both shoulders to allow for symmetrical muscle use. Pull out a calculator. Take your child's weight times 15% to find the maximum load he or she should be placing on their back. Whether or not the backpack's load is within the safe 15%, I see too many children carry their backpacks at the "small" of their lower back. This forces him or her to bend their torso forward in an effort to compensate. This creates muscle imbalance. The solution is to adjust the straps so the backpack's load is raised high across the shoulder blades. Your child should notice a significant feeling of weight reduction.

If your child complains of chronic headache, neck, shoulder or low back pain, it may be the result of faulty backpack use. Use these simple checks to develop those young spines into strong healthy adults.

If your child complains of chronic headaches, neck, shoulder, or low back pain, or you suspect muscle imbalance or misalignment in your child as a result of improper backpack use, Dr. Bennese can perform a "structural blueprint" to find out more if there are faulty muscle patterns or misalignment causing those symptoms.

The "120/80" Standard

Synchrony-ChiroCare-Normal 200pxClick for largerHappy August everyone! I cannot believe how fast the year is going. In this month's blog post, we will discuss the concept of "normal" and how we establish just what "normal" really is.

In health care, the concept of having a "normal" to refer to as a goal for care is not new. A common example of this is "120/80" You probably recognize this as the normal (average) blood pressure reading. If you were to be evaluated by a physician who determined your average blood pressure reading to be 210/135, obviously a significantly abnormal finding, intervention to normalize this condition would be recommended. What is the goal for care? To lower your blood pressure into the normal range. Thus, "120/80" becomes a goal for treatment for "high blood pressure" or "hypertension".

In Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP), we utilize the "Normal Spinal Model" as our goal for care. This model has been researched, and tested by the scientific community, and is accepted as being an accurate representation of how the spine should be built for maximum strength and stability. When your spine is built normally, it is best able to handle the stress of gravity and to handle the loads imposed by the environment upon your body.

How do I determine how your spine compares to the Normal Spinal Model? By first evaluating your static (non-moving) upright (standing) posture, I determine how your body is bearing weight, how gravity is affecting you when you stand up. Your posture is then recorded on paper by using a well-established system of notation used in biomechanics (the Cartesian coordinate system).

After this is complete, precise standing x-rays are exposed, and your projected image is compared to that which was earlier observed during the postural exam thus cross checking your projected image with your actual viewed posture.

Once these two studies are completed, an accurate understanding of how your body is built is achieved. The radiographs (X-rays) are now analyzed to determine how you "measure up" to the normal spinal model. Extremely accurate measurements are performed on your X-rays, and specific lines are drawn upon them in order that you are able to see how your spine compares to the Normal Spinal Model. When all of this preparatory work is complete, your X-rays are shown and explained to you so you may understand what work, (if any) is needed to correct your posture.

The beautiful thing about this process is that just as a high blood pressure reading provides a goal for care as detailed above, so does this analysis. We both know what needs to be accomplished for you and your spine to be as healthy as possible.

After a period of 8-9 weeks of care, with the specific application of forces applied to your spine to correct its abnormal position, a new set of comparative x-rays are performed to measure your progress. Often at this time, it is determined you have achieved maximum correction of your spinal problem, in other cases, still more work is required to achieve as near normal as possible. In any event, there is no guessing involved, as you can plainly see how your spine has progressed.

When the time comes that you have made as much change as possible towards normal, then maintaining this new improved position is an option. Ask yourself, if I feel good does this mean I am healthy? Do you know what your blood pressure is right now? If you do, how do you know, and why do you care if you "feel good"? This is the same as with the spine. Many people, maybe even you, are walking around thinking that they "feel fine" despite the fact that their spinal structure is severely abnormal, and very unhealthy. An appropriate spinal evaluation using the latest technology of postural examination and X-ray can ascertain just how healthy your spine is. Why leave your health to chance?

Flu Vaccine Statistics, Don't Be Fooled!

If I came up with a flu prevention plan that only worked for 1 patient out of every 100, would you take part in my plan? Would that be effective, let alone economical? Of course not; it would be ridiculous.

Yet, that is exactly what is happening with each year's flu vaccine. There is an immoral reporting of vaccine efficacy data to you.

Take for instance a major flu vaccine study that concludes people 60 years and older have a 50% reduction in getting the flu when they receive the vaccine. Sounds great, right? Who wouldn't enjoy a 50% reduction in flu? The dirty little secret is that this is a RELATIVE reduction of 50%. The actual data from the study is this:

3% of the unvaccinated group got the flu.
2% of the vaccinated group got the flu.
The difference between 2% and 3%?.......50%!!!!

Be very focused here. That is a RELATIVE reduction of 50%. The ABSOLUTE reduction in flu risk was a mere 1% (the difference between 2% and 3%). Let me repeat that so it sinks in: According to the research that is the rationale for mass flu vaccination, you have a 1% less chance of getting the flu with the vaccine than doing nothing at all.

Flu Prevention and Winter Wellness for the Savvy, Health Conscious Individual

Have you ever wondered why there is such thing as a "seasonal illness?" Why would viruses and bacteria go on vacation and only come around during the fall and winter months? They don't. This is a myth.

The truth is that we are exposed to viruses and bacteria every day of our lives; the thing determining who gets sick and who stays well is NOT the presence of the viruses or bacteria, or the ambient temperature; it is the state of our Immune Function.

So why does our immune function tend to be lowered during the fall and winter months? Well, that is the big question. A popular theory, and one I believe to have much truth based on current research is that our Vitamin D levels tend to be lowest in the fall and winter, only to begin rising again in the spring and peaking in the summer months. Why? Natural Vitamin D is produced in our bodies from cholesterol via ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Due to the tilt of the earth, we do not get exposed to much UV radiation in the fall and winter months (not to mention, we wear a lot more clothes during those times). Vitamin D is strongly correlated to optimal immune function.
