Dr. Bennese's Back to School Backpack Tips

September is here. It is that time of year again.....for me to unfortunately see A LOT of local kids incorrectly wearing their backpacks to school.

Follow my simple tips to help your child to grow properly without creating misalignment and faulty muscle patterns.

Synchrony Chirocare Back to School Backpack TipsCarrying a backpack on one shoulder is a recipe for creating abnormal muscle patterns. Use wide padded straps on both shoulders to allow for symmetrical muscle use. Pull out a calculator. Take your child's weight times 15% to find the maximum load he or she should be placing on their back. Whether or not the backpack's load is within the safe 15%, I see too many children carry their backpacks at the "small" of their lower back. This forces him or her to bend their torso forward in an effort to compensate. This creates muscle imbalance. The solution is to adjust the straps so the backpack's load is raised high across the shoulder blades. Your child should notice a significant feeling of weight reduction.
