"What is the reACT™ Personal Trainer?"

 Instead of boring you with the technical details of what it is, let me simply tell you what it does right from the start: The "reACT" machine improves your reaction time.

The "reACT" stands for Rapid Eccentric Anaerobic Core Trainer. It is the third piece of the puzzle in the BStrong4Life® system of training for Strength, Balance, Bone Health,and Fall Prevention and we are very excited for its launch.

There are three types of muscular contraction: concentric, isometric and eccentric. Most people are familiar with concentric (muscle shortening under tension) and isometric (muscle tension without any change in length). However, eccentric contractions aren't as well known.

Eccentric contractions happen when the muscle lengthens while at the same time it is under tension. This situation occurs whenever you are absorbing force and decelerating such as:

  • Landing from a jump or in the landing phase of walking/running
  • Walking down stairs
  • Changing direction while running

Our muscles literally act as springs during eccentric contractions. Eccentric training increases a muscle's ability to produce force at a longer length. This is one of the ways eccentric training prevents injury.

The BStrong4Life® System incorporates eccentric, anaerobic core training by utilizing the reACT™ training machine. Synchrony ChiroCare™ patients and BStrong4Life® clients will now have the opportunity to use this third piece in the BStrong4Life system of training.

Originally designed for high-end athletes in sports that require lightning speed reaction time like hockey and baseball, the BStrong4Life® system of training has harnessed this power for common folk like you and me to use. People all the way from a weekend warrior athlete to a 70 year old female with osteoporosis.

How would a 70 year old woman benefit from improved reaction time in daily life? Fall Prevention! Let's say Mrs. Jones trips on the edge of the carpet. The difference in reaction times between a fall ending with a broken hip and a fall where you catch yourself before harm has occurred is measured in microseconds. A quick reaction time engages muscles into action sooner and helps to prevent or mediate debilitating falls in the first place.
